Optimist Creed

15,000 years ago, a major earthquake shook Northern California, and during this event, the top of a mountain ridge in the Mayacamas Range broke down and filled a small river valley below. This event formed what is now the McDowell Valley. It is located in the middle of the Mountains just north of Alexander Valley and sits at about 1000 ft. elevation. It is one of the smallest viticultural appellations in the state, distinct not only due to its location and elevation, but because of the extremely rocky, well drained soils that are the remnants of those mountain tops and that now fill the valley. Grape vines were planted to these soils in the early 1900’s and they have flourished here ever since. We were fortunate to find a block of Sauvignon Blanc that is nearly 40 years old located here that due to the age of the vines and the efforts of the grower, produce outstanding quality fruit at only 3 tons per acre. This fruit has been sold to one of California’s top producers of Sauvignon Blanc for years, but beginning with the 2006 vintage, we were able to wrest some away for Optimist Creed. We believe this fruit to be some of the most distinctive, high quality Sauvignon Blanc available in California, and are understandably excited about the opportunity to make wine from it.
